Zemi

Zemi is my 4 ½ foot Ball Python. She used to accompany me to the shop regularly, but some customers found her a bit frightening, despite her calm and gentle nature. When I bought Zemi I didn't know at the time that she was an import snake that had probably faced uncountable cruelties during her importation, I just thought I was getting a great deal. Boy was I wrong! Zemi was covered with mites, ticks, internal parasites and a horrible yeast infection in her mouth. Poor Zemi refused to eat for over a year. Even though she didn't eat she was staying remarkably healthy so her veterinarian didn't want to resort to force feeding her until it was absolutely necessary. Finally I decided to give her one more chance to feed herself before I took her in to get force fed. She surprised me by eating as a healthy snake should and has continued to do well for many years now. After her veterinary treatments to make her the healthy snake she is today I soon realized that what I spent in veterinary bills would have bought me 3 healthy, domestically bred snakes. You really do get what you pay for. Do the animal world, and yourself, a favor and only buy reptiles and other animals that have been captive bred by a responsible and respected breeder.

Quotes:

"Louis Maistros has written a lyrical, complex, and brave novel that takes enormous risks and pulls them all off. He is a writer to watch and keep reading, a writer to cherish."
Peter Straub

"The Society of North American Magic Realists welcomes its newest, most dazzling member, Louis Maistros. His debut novel is a thing of wonder, unlike anything in our literature. It startles. It stuns. It stupefies. No novel since CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES has done such justice to New Orleans. If Franz Kafka had been able to write like Peter Straub, this might have been the result."
Donald Harington,
Winner of the Robert Penn Warren Award and the Oxford-American Lifetime Achievement Award.

“The Sound of Building Coffins is easily one of the finest and truest pieces of New Orleans fiction I've ever read.”
- Poppy Z. Brite

“One has to write with considerable authenticity to pull off a story steeped in magic and swamp water that examines race and class, death and rebirth, Haitian voodoo, and the beginnings of jazz in 1891 New Orleans...The plot is complex and magical, grounded in the history of the city, without being overly sentimental. There is a comfort with death as a part of life in this work that reveals deep feeling for the city and its past....Highly recommended for all fiction collections, especially where there is an interest in jazz."
