First let me offer thanks and appreciation to Douglas Cooke whose help in researching this piece was invaluable. Please visit his wonderful website dedicated to Richard and Mimi Farina at

This songwriting agreement has an interesting history.

The song that is the subject of this contract is "All the World has Gone By".

At the date of this agreement, its authorship is credited; Kim Chappell: lyrics, Joan C. Baez: music. Kim Chappell was a close friend of Joan's, but not a musician. You will notice on page two of the contract that Baez has forfeited any financial gain, giving Ms. Chappell 100% royalties. This is indicative of Baez's great generosity to her friends.

The song was eventually slated to appear on the Richard Farina produced rock album that Joan Baez was working on in 1966. Richard Farina died tragically before its completion and the project was scrapped - some refer to this as Joan Baez's "Lost Album".

The song itself wound up on a collection of Richard and Mimi Farina related songs called, "Memories". Apparently, Mr. Farina revised the lyrics for the final version as he is credited as a lyricist alongside Ms. Chappell according to BMI and ASCAP records.

A little background: Richard and Mimi Farina were a fine folk act in their own right - Richard was also an acclaimed author and poet. His novel, "Been Down So Long it Looks Like Up to Me", is considered a classic. Mimi Farina's maiden name is Baez - she is Joan's sister. Kim Chappell, to my knowledge, has no other songwriting credits.

"Louis Maistros has written a lyrical, complex, and brave novel that takes enormous risks and pulls them all off. He is a writer to watch and keep reading, a writer to cherish."
Peter Straub

"The Society of North American Magic Realists welcomes its newest, most dazzling member, Louis Maistros. His debut novel is a thing of wonder, unlike anything in our literature. It startles. It stuns. It stupefies. No novel since CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES has done such justice to New Orleans. If Franz Kafka had been able to write like Peter Straub, this might have been the result."
Donald Harington,
Winner of the Robert Penn Warren Award and the Oxford-American Lifetime Achievement Award.

“The Sound of Building Coffins is easily one of the finest and truest pieces of New Orleans fiction I've ever read.”
- Poppy Z. Brite

“One has to write with considerable authenticity to pull off a story steeped in magic and swamp water that examines race and class, death and rebirth, Haitian voodoo, and the beginnings of jazz in 1891 New Orleans...The plot is complex and magical, grounded in the history of the city, without being overly sentimental. There is a comfort with death as a part of life in this work that reveals deep feeling for the city and its past....Highly recommended for all fiction collections, especially where there is an interest in jazz."
