BENNY IN BRUSSELS VOLUME ONE by Benny Goodman featuring Jimy Rushing, Columbia CL-1247, 1958, mono deep groove, red, black, and white six-eye label. Vinyl: VG, Jacket VG (clean but with some splitting at seams)

The unlikely union of Jimmy Rushing and Benny Goodman produced this excellent live recording. Most notably is the great jump blues song "Brussels Blues", in which Jimmy Rushing sings:

I'm going to Brussels, dig that Brussels fair
And I'm going to Brussels, dig that Brussels fair
Big shot, little shot, square's gonna be there

They're gonna jump and shout, we're gonna have a real good time
We gonna jump and shout and have a real good time
Benny Goodman gonna swing, if he doesn't change his mind

Jimmy Rushing has signed the back of this album; "Best wishes / To Francis / From / Jimmy Rushing".

Jimmy Rushing's career began in the mid 1920s with Walter Page's Blue Devils, graduating to the great Bennie Moten Orchestra in 1929. When Moten died in 1935, Rushing's talent was snapped up by Count Basie.

Although based in the blues, Rushing has sung with many jazz luminaries including Basie, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck, Coleman Hawkins, and Buck Clayton among others.

He was affectionately known as Mr. Five by Five by his colleagues - a monicker referring to his height and girth.

"Louis Maistros has written a lyrical, complex, and brave novel that takes enormous risks and pulls them all off. He is a writer to watch and keep reading, a writer to cherish."
Peter Straub

"The Society of North American Magic Realists welcomes its newest, most dazzling member, Louis Maistros. His debut novel is a thing of wonder, unlike anything in our literature. It startles. It stuns. It stupefies. No novel since CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES has done such justice to New Orleans. If Franz Kafka had been able to write like Peter Straub, this might have been the result."
Donald Harington,
Winner of the Robert Penn Warren Award and the Oxford-American Lifetime Achievement Award.

“The Sound of Building Coffins is easily one of the finest and truest pieces of New Orleans fiction I've ever read.”
- Poppy Z. Brite

“One has to write with considerable authenticity to pull off a story steeped in magic and swamp water that examines race and class, death and rebirth, Haitian voodoo, and the beginnings of jazz in 1891 New Orleans...The plot is complex and magical, grounded in the history of the city, without being overly sentimental. There is a comfort with death as a part of life in this work that reveals deep feeling for the city and its past....Highly recommended for all fiction collections, especially where there is an interest in jazz."
